Beginners Section

Grand Pier by Dave Johnson – 1st place

Dave writes ‘Grand Pier was from a day spent at Clevedon, Burnham and then Weston. I was trying long exposures but the weather was against me - no wind and too much sun. But at Weston, when the sun went down I managed this one.

Cockpit Detail by Dave Johnson – 2nd place

Dave says ‘Cockpit Detail is taken from the Co-Pilot's seat of the 747 based at Kemble which is open to the public. The cockpit itself is only visitable once or twice a year and I was told off for playing with the controls!’

Rising Sun Lights Poppy Field by Tony Leach – 3rd place

Tony’s intention was an early morning shoot of butterflies in Bulgaria. But the backlit poppies meant a quick change of lens and a very satisfying image.

Wet Dawn on South Bank by Tony Leach – HC

Another early morning shot on the South bank in London early in the morning. The weather was wet, very wet.  But an ISO 1600 1/10th sec shot at f11 brought out all the architectural lines.

St. Katherine’s Dock by Tony Leach – HC

On the day, nothing particular stood out but a panorama enabled me to use the pontoons to frame the harbour and make a pleasing image.

Robins Feeding by Richard Jones– HC

Robins feeding was taken in July last year, in our back garden, while I had a set-up to attract the Nuthatch and Great Spotted Woodpecker into the garden.
I noticed the adult and juvenile Robins on the fence and while taking some frames was surprised when the adult started to feed the juvenile.

Red Shoes by Heidi Massey – HC

Heidi says ‘I was taking the intermediate photography course with Lacock photography lead by Marcus McAdams and spotted these red shoes outside one of the antique shops in Lacock and I just had to stop and take a photo of them. I just loved the way they were displayed and how eye-catching they were’.

Ocean View by Paul Wells – HC

This picture was taken mid English Channel In April 2022 on a weekend trip to Cherbourg France, I was taking in a lovely sunny calm crossing on the promenade deck, as I sat with camera in hand I noticed how the horizontal hand rails and the shadows cast on the decking was like looking at a mirror image, I liked the way the whole picture was almost symmetrical, with the sun being so bright and high in the sky I knew that taking the picture in colour wouldn’t give the impact that I was looking for so I decided to take the image in Black and White, this changed the picture completely, even managed to capture a tanker between the gap in the handrails if you look very closely. Camera Used Canon 7D.

Boatyard by Paul Wells – HC

Paul says ‘This picture was taken whilst on a visit to Cherbourg France, I went on a walk about whilst there, venturing in and around Cherbourg Harbour and found some boats and boat houses that were very rustic looking with loads of rust and flaking paint, the weather was a brilliant blue sky with the sun very high in the sky, I wanted to get across the rustic and textured points of the boat yard, the sun was very bright so I chose to take the image in Black & White to try and get this texture across to the viewer’.

Intermediate Section

Zebra, Botswana by Penny Clarke – 1st place

Penny says ‘The zebra was taken in Botswana and I was just going to delete the image. People tell you to keep images and as your photography and processing develops, you might revisit images and get more out of them. Well before I deleted it I started playing with the image that actually looked as though there was nothing interesting about it. In moving the dehaze, something I generally do not do, except with African images where there might be a heat haze, the image turned into something a lot more interesting’. 

The Long and Winding Road by Penny Clarke – 2nd place

Penny says ‘I was in the Lake District on a wet rainy day and my husband and I were driving around exploring when I saw something I wanted to photograph over a stone wall. The road was single track it was raining and we had to pull over and take an image quickly. I then looked back over the road we just had just travelled and saw this scene. I needed to be quick as the rain was starting to increase so this shot was taken hand held’.

Wing Walkers by David Evans - 3rd place

David’s fabulous image was taken in August at the East Kirkby Air Show. East Kirkby is base to Lancaster 'Just Jane' which is being returned to flying condition hopefully, in approximately 5 years' time. 

Just Chilling by Bridget Codrington – HC

Bridget took this image when she was staying in an apartment in Florence, Italy. She happened to look out of her kitchen window onto a courtyard and spotted this chap chilling by the window. She liked the way the subject couldn’t be identified and the simplicity of the shot.

Spanish Air Force EF18 Hornet by Peter Evans – HC

Pete’s image was taken with his Olympus OM1 camera with a full frame equivalent lens of 160-600mm. The location was a July visit to the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in July 2022.

Kneed for Speed by Richard Blackbourne – HC

Richard’s incredible image was taken at the British superbike meeting at Thruxton in August, he was practicing his panning and this was the best one out of 50!

Asylum, Steampunk, Camera, Action by David Evans – HC

David says - A welcome return to the annual Asylum Steampunk festival held at Lincoln over the three days of the August Bank holiday.
The Castle and Cathedral Areas are totally given over to the festival and was the first to be held since 2019 due to the Covid lockdowns we are all too familiar with. Probable number of participants are into the thousands making for a real spectacular with numerous way-out costumes and characters to be seen. And they all want to be photographed!

ust Wait by Penny Clarke – HC

Doing street photography is always something I am unsure about but when I am out doing it I love the spontaneity. Probably why I like wildlife photography so much, you never know what you are going to see. This gentleman as sitting on a bench with an ice cream and it was too good an opportunity to miss. Lacock is a great place to try out street photography as so many tourists are already walking around with cameras. Approach with a smile and people are very giving.

Advanced Section

Fizzy Pencils by Janet Rutter – 1st place

I had been experimenting with various items that might look good with water drops including the pencils. This proved not particularly successful, but once I had the idea of using lemonade instead the results were dramatic. I had taped them together, and anchored in the bottom of a glass dish on a light pad, and introduced the lemonade. It was pleasing to see all the bubbles collecting around the pencils with such a good result.

Biker Life by Jane Wiltshire – 2nd place

This image is of Dave, a guy I met at our local pub. I knew as soon as I saw him he had to be photographed. Such a character. I took the image at a a friends barn.

Playing a Delicate Tune by Dave Eagle – 3rd place

Dave’s delicate image is a snap of a hoverfly on a chicory flower from his garden.
Out in the garden experimenting with a new macro lens, the detail of the Chicory flower made an interesting subject to work with and when the hoverfly landed, it just seemed to me that it was playing a tune with the stamens of the flower.

Fallen Apples by Jane Wiltshire – HC

‘Our neighbour put a box of fallen apples from his garden tree outside his front garden for people to take. Would have been rude not to photograph them. I have a studio set up in the spare bedroom of our house. This image was light painted in a dark room’.

Cocker Inflight by David Wilkinson – HC

Cocker in flight was photographed in the Scottish islands. Ginny the Cocker in the photograph loves all things energetic, on this occasion she was happy to leap over the branches, time and time again, until I created the image I wanted.

Gunsmoke by Jane Wiltshire – HC

Jane says ‘This image was taken at the Battle of Edgehill Reenactment, which is hosted by The Sealed Knot. I have taken images at their events a couple of times before. They got in touch with me asking if I could take some for this event, so they sent me some VIP tickets’.

Red Kite by Tim Tapley – HC

Tim tells me ‘We had gone to Greenham Common to try to see Woodlark that frequent that area. We didn’t manage to find any of them but were compensated by having plenty of these majestic Red Kites soaring around us in the blue summer sky, which lent itself to a perfect photo opportunity when this individual seemed to come to check us out and provided the extra bonus of eye contact to add to the image’.

Milky Way at Portland Crane by Caroline Wright – HC

The Milky Way at Portland Crane was taken on Robert Harvey’s Astrophotography Course in late August. The image was quite challenging as I needed to avoid the light from the lighthouse spoiling the image. There are 20 light images and 10 dark images stacked to create the final image.

Burnham on Sea Sunset by Caroline Wright – HC

Caroline’s image was taken in early May, she was checking the location for a possible Club trip. The weather was perfect although she would have liked the tide to be higher, which was the case for the club trip in late June.

Tools of the Trade by Dave Eagle - HC

Dave says “This was taken at Cockington Court in Devon. 
The tools depicted are hanging on the door of the Blacksmith’s shed, and are used daily by the Blacksmith Rex Latham and his daughter Kate.
The image was taken with a fuji X100, leaning in to get parallel to the door but not too far in as  to get into the blacksmith’s danger zone”.
