1st Cwm Idwal in Winter by Robert Harvey

‘Cwn Idwal in Winter’ by Robert Harvey was awarded 1st place in the Annual Landscape Projected Image Competition 2023 and won the Derrick Turner Memorial Trophy for the best landscape projected image. The north-facing corrie of Cwm Idwal is one of Snowdonia's most dramatic landscapes. It is well-suited by low cloud draped over The Glyders.

Woodborough Frosty Sunrise by Craig Purvis

‘Woodborough Frosty Sunrise’ by Craig Purvis @purvis_pictures was awarded 3rd place in the Annual Landscape Projected Image Competition 2023.
Craig”g writes “I had been out much earlier in the morning to catch (successfully) an anticipated colourful Golden Hour and once the Sun had risen I started to return to my car. However, I noticed that the Sun's first golden rays were melting the light frost, leaving the shaded areas still white. This created a wonderfully textured scene highlighting Wiltshire's often rolling landscape. Woodborough Hill is a favourite focal point for this area and lent itself beautifully to the unfolding scene."

Blea Tarn by Sarah Lovett

Sarah writes: ‘This photo was taken on my first visit to the Lake District. It was January but we were blessed with a beautiful sunny morning.

This was my first attempt at a serious landscape shot using exposure bracketing and also thinking about the composition. An hour later the weather had changed to grey and gloomy!"

Langdale Pikes by Brendan Lovett

‘Langdale Pikes’ by Brendan Lovett was Highly Commended by the judge in the Annual Landscape Projected Image Competition 2023.
Brendan’s image is a view of the Langdale Pikes taken from the edge of Side Pike. Taken during a picnic lunch at the end of January during some unseasonably sunny weather.

Snowdown Horseshoe from Mymbyr by Craig Purvis

Craig explains: “A planned trip to Snowdonia saw us at Mymbyr for a sunrise. As always, a bit of luck, alongside careful planning, made all the difference. We were rewarded with golden light on the Horseshoe with the added bonus of a particularly well lit cloud to the right of the scene, which I wanted to incorporate, hence the panoramic aspect. I deliberately composed the image so that the front left rocks mirrored the distant ridge line which I felt tied the image together."

Warnscale Bothy and Buttermere by Robert Harvey

‘Warnscale Bothy & Buttermere’ by Robert Harvey was Highly Commended by the judge in the Annual Landscape Projected Image Competition 2023.
High on the flanks of Haystacks, Warnscale Bothy enjoys one of the best views in the Lake District overlooking Buttermere. It is a little strenuous to reach and slightly tricky to find but amply rewards the effort. I chose an afternoon with ominous dark clouds hanging over the mountain tops to evoke the mood I wanted.

Llyn Padarn at Sunrise by Robert Harvey

Lone trees are a favourite subject for photographers and this one has a superb setting on the shore of Llyn Padarn, framed by Snowdon and The Glyders beyond. When the lake level is high the tree looks especially good, surrounded by water with leading lines formed by pieces of slate. In winter the sun rises over the Pass of Llanberis, directly behind the tree, and on this occasion the pre-sunrise sky complemented the subject perfectly.

Pewsey Vale's hedgerow guardians by Gerald Clarke

Gerald writes: ‘I have previously taken these Pewsey Vale, early morning shadows with a shorter focal length, and on this very cold morning, decided to use my 150-600mm Tamron lens on a 90D Canon camera. Image taken at 256mm, f/8, 1/125 sec. I enjoyed using the hedgerows from the corners of the image and the lane leading the viewer into the photo. The trees are characters, especially in the bottom middle of the image, an ivy covering giving the appearance of an opera singer with their arms in the air.’

Opium Poppies at Sunset,East Morden by Bridget Codrington

A fellow photographer friend @sue.wadman had spotted these fields of Opium Poppies and kindly asked me if I would like to join her on a trip to photograph them. We set off for Dorset in the late afternoon and spent a very happy couple of hours photographing the poppy fields, pastoral views across to the village church and orchids flowering in the field margins.

As the sun began to set and soft golden light filled the fields, I decided to go for a low down, contre-jour (literal translation 'against daylight') shot straight into the sun. I love the detail that appears on the stalks, leaves and flowers when they are lit from behind.

Frosty Sunrise, Bristol Avon by Robert Harvey

‘Frosty Sunrise, Bristol Avon’ by Robert Harvey was awarded 1st place in the Annual Landscape Print Competition 2023 and won the Silver Birches Trophy for best landscape print (a trophy donated by Robert himself).
Robert tells me: ‘Hoar frost forms when water vapour condenses straight to ice, often on vegetation close to water on cold, clear, still winter nights. I captured this scene looking south-east along the Bristol Avon towards a winter sunrise’.

Sunset Porlock Marsh by Robert Harvey

Robert explains: ‘Porlock Marsh in Somerset at spring high tide, around half an hour after sunset. Some 30 years ago the trees were part of an orchard but they have been killed by seawater following a breach in the barrier beach (visible behind the tree on the right). Their skeletons stand as sentinels to rising sea levels’.

Sunrise at Hartland Quay by Robert Harvey

Robert writes: ‘The incoming tide splashes over steeply tilted rocks as the rising sun turns the sky pink. A neutral density filter slowed down the rushing water, enabling the viewer to concentrate on the remarkable rock structures, a remnant of the Variscan Orogeny (mountain-building) some 350 million years ago’. naturalworldphotography.net

Evening Light Sgurr nan Gillean by Frank Collins

Frank says: We were lucky for our first evening in Skye in April 2022 – the skies cleared for some late evening sunshine over the Cuillins. I was taken by the unusual cloud formation and set the camera really low, just above the water, which captured the cloud reflection in the evening light, framing the mountain. A few minutes later the cloud closed in again and the light had gone – and this was the best evening light we had in 5 days on Skye.

Hackpen Hill by David Lock

David writes: “Taken in late summer on a walk between Barbury Castle and Avebury, looking for crop circles. I liked view and tried to translate the strong winds’ affect on the vegetation by slowing the shutter speed down a bit.

I was pleased that Peter (the judge) saw merit in it and his thoughts on how to improve it were really welcome.”
