Beginners Section

Common Puffball in Savernake Forest by Pete Evans – 1st place

Pete took this image on a Fungi hunting photo walk in Savernake Forest.
It was taken with my Olympus OMD E-M1 mark3 and a 12-40 lens. I lit the mushroom with a small diffused led light from the right. I took a series 20 shot stacked images at F5.6, 1/25 sec and ISO200.
The series of photos were then stacked together using the Helicon photo stacking software before photo editing carried out in photo raw and photoshop. He also did a little bit of gardening around the mushroom.

Newly Emerged Fly Agaric by Gerald Clarke – 2nd place

The Fly Agaric were clustered along a line of birch and hazel thickets in West Wood, many at different stages of emergence and decay. Sadly the following day, the group l had been photographing, had gone, possibly by wildlife, more likely human interference. Having never photographed mushrooms before, they are amazing when studied close up, and have provided hours of entertainment, looking for that image that stands out.

Eastbourne Pier by Adam Woodhouse – 3rd place

Adam took this photo standing on the beach outside the bandstand in Eastbourne. Adam told me ‘I didn’t have much time and was looking to capture a few interesting shots while I had the chance. Initially I wanted to take pictures of the sea, but I noticed the pier and thought it was really interesting. Having only my 58mm lens with me, I resorted to one of my favourite compositional styles - “far away subjects with lots of sky”. I used Ilford Delta 100 film which was pushed 2 stops in processing. I felt that this gave the image great contrast and brought out the grain of the film in a really pleasant way’.

Intermediate Section

Owl in the Grass by Richard Blackbourne - 1st place

Richard took this image at a bird of prey photoshoot, lying on his stomach in a sheep field!

Windhover by David Evans – 2nd place

Windhover - another name for the common Kestrel. The name refers to the falcon's ability to hover in mid-air while hunting prey. We had made the 90 mile trip to Bempton Cliffs on July 8th this year, a day of blue skies, mainly to photograph the sea birds. Whilst walking between the viewing platforms we were so fortunate that we came across the hunting Kestrel. It hovered just a few metres away for what seemed an age and filled the frame, being so close. I was using the Sony 200-600mm lens set at 600mm.

This exciting image was taken at Thruxton at the British superbike round in July.

Pip Atkins is a very striking local photographic model, the image was taken at a Sony promotional event hosted by Wex Bristol.

Rememberance, Captain Gerald Clarke by Penny Clarke – HC

I asked Penny to tell me the story behind this emotive still life: ‘We have a lot of history regarding my husband’s grandfather Captain Gerald Clarke who was in 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters. I thought this still life would be an interesting way of remembering him. I wanted to have wild poppies in the image so had to wait for the right time of year to draw all the elements together. The poem was found in one of the family photograph albums relating to that time. We think that the flag could possibly have been with another family member in the trenches. I wanted to have the reunion dinner menu card to show he came through the war and the cigarette case which was presented to him by his commanding officer.’

Advanced Section

Walking the Pebble by Robin Gregory – 1st place

Rob explains how his winning image was created: ‘Three separate photographs were used to create this image, a foreground, middle and the pebble. The foreground was taken at Studland, the middle also taken at Studland included a guy digging for ragworm who, after a little tweaking, became the man walking the pebble. The pebble was taken in the garden and the final image was mashed together in Photoshop’.

Movement in the Waves by Sue Wadman – 2nd place

Sue said ‘I paid a visit in mid October to a beach on the south coast.  The forecast was for wind and sun and I thought I would try my hand at some photography involving wave movement.  After hundreds of failures there were a couple that stood out and this was one.  I love the simplicity of the shot and the sun shining made the colours pop when I did a little (and I mean a little) bit of processing in LR’.

Roman Fort, Hardknott Pass by Robert Harvey – 3rd place

Hardknott Pass in Cumbria is reputed to be the steepest road in England. On the western side of the pass lie the remains of Hardknott Roman Fort, which must have been a bleak and windswept outpost of the Roman Empire. On this blustery October day, small breaks in the cloud were casting brief shafts of sunlight across the landscape. Composing with the ruined fort as my foreground, I waited for a beam of sunlight to momentarily catch the top of Hardknott Pass to take this picture.

Bits of Devizes by Robin Gregory – HC

Rob tells me that this image was created using parts of buildings in Devizes to create a 'made up' building. Very ingenious!

Roosting Blue by Caroline Wright – HC

This image was taken on Morgans Hill Nature reserve earlier this year. Caroline had gone looking for Orchids shortly after dawn, but also found insects and butterflies waiting for the warmth of the sun to dry the dew on their wings.

Pagan Sunrise by Robert Harvey – HC

This picture was taken on May Day 2021. By late spring, the sun rises far enough north that it can be included in this composition along with two of the largest sarsen stones in Avebury and an ash tree. Frost, though not uncommon in Wiltshire in early May, gave a slightly surreal feel to the scene. Mist attenuated the sun sufficiently to enable six bracketed exposures to capture detail in both he highlights and the shadows without flare. Although I went intending to photograph the landscape, the presence of a pagan celebrating this auspicious day of the year added interest and conveyed the occasion, adding to the story-telling value of the picture. I was fortunate that he kindly agreed to model for me.

Wallace the Bald Eagle by Martin Stokes – HC

Martin’s image was taken on an outing to Hawk Conservancy back in July during one of the daily flying displays, this particular one was called Valley of the Eagles and takes place in their Wild Flower Meadow, which was in full bloom. As the Kite landed I got low down and took the shot as wanted to hide the tree stump as much as possible, but in doing this and focusing on the bird  i was actually shooting through the flowers which created a nice bokeh effect.
