The Gallops by Barbara Jones – 1st place

Barbara says ‘The reason I took this photograph was because I wanted to photograph something that had motion, so I contacted the stables and they very kindly allowed me access to the gallops. I was taken to three different areas on the gallops, it was a lovely experience. My image was taken at around 8am on a hazy sunny morning on the gallops at Beckhampton. I took a lot of horse and riders as they approached me I then thought how would they turn out if I took some into the sun?’
I think the results speak for themselves!

Intermediate Section

Shades of Red by Bridget Codrington – 1st place

Bridget was doing a project on low-key photography when she gathered a few dark red items from around hers and her neighbour’s home to make a still life. She used only natural light but placed her items some distance from the window to keep the light levels low.

Zebras by Penny Clarke – 2nd place

I asked Penny how she had created such a stunning image: The image Zebras was taken in the Serengeti and on first looking at it I dismissed it. However, it did show the essence of what zebras are with lots of stripes which are meant to confuse their predators. A group of zebras is called a dazzle and that is what I wanted to portray.
How was it achieved? Well in photoshop I created a new layer, had ‘kind’ selected in the panel and instead of ‘normal’ I used the drop down box and selected ‘exclusion’. I then moved the ‘exclusion’ area until I was happy where it was positioned. A simple but effective edit.

Contemplation by Wendy Weller - 3rd place

This image was taken in the crypt in Winchester Cathedral, the man being one of Anthony Gormley’s figures. The tiles were covered with a thin layer of water, hence the reflection [probably as a result of flooding.] I didn’t have a camera with me so the image was taken on my phone. Virtually a straight image just a bit of cropping and slight lightening.

Advanced Section

Granny's Bonnets by Pam Mullings – 1st place

Winter Woodland by Martin Stokes – 2nd place

My image was taken at Savernake just after Christmas last year just yards off the Grand Avenue. The forecast was fairly positive for some light snow showers so I took a gamble, parked up in Savernake and waited. I didn’t have to wait long before the snow started falling right on time but only a light snow fall, although a light scattering had already settled on the grass and some of the branches. So I took several images at various shutter speeds, then choose 3 of the images and merged them in Photoshop using the Lighten blending mode to end up with the final image.

Misumena vatia by Tim Tapley – 3rd place

This image was taken in Tim’s garden. It is a young Misumena Vatia which had chosen a bindweed flower on which to lie in wait for prey. In its standard white livery it is well camouflaged for an ambush attack although, amazingly, they can morph to become more yellow or green to match other flower colours.
They are tenacious crab spiders and will face you with forelegs raised in an aggressive manner when you get close with the camera, so make for an interesting subject to photograph face on.
