Beginners Section

1st Hare in Morning Dew by Gerald Clarke

So many images of hares see them sitting still or boxing, l thought this was a bit different together with the lighting and the background. I think the hare knew l was there, hence the look and pause in its stride. I was thrilled to achieve my first, first place in club competition, quite unexpected.

2nd Red Stag by Barbara Jones

3rd Tate Modern by Sarah Lovett

Sarah’s striking image was taken on a Special Interest Group club trip to London. Perfect timing as this smartly dressed gentleman walked into the shot.

HC A Very Happy Street Performer by Graham Sawyer

Graham’s image was taken at the Devizes international street festival in last May. The performer was on a mobile stage about 15 feet high. The challenge was to get a sharp image as her arms were moving and not to include some distracting street furniture. The camera was set to burst mode so as to select the best image.

HC Iford Manor by Barbara Jones

HC - Le Havre by Sarah Lovett

Sarah visited Le Havre to capture post-war architecture. The large concrete sculpture in the distance lines up perfectly with the Avenue.

HC Monarch Red Stag by Gerald Clarke

l had high hopes for this image of the strongest stag we saw this year in the New Forest. However, l also remember the phrase, bird on a stick. In this case the stag portrays a lot about a dominant stag, but the image lacks movement. However I was pleased to be highly commended, and hope to do better next time.

Intermediate Section

1st Room for One More by Craig Purvis

Craig writes: ‘I took this image at the heronry, which is the upper lake at Bowood estate. This lake is often my destination when I take my dog on a walk from Sandy Lane. I always take my camera (100-400mm fitted) as there's frequently wildlife of interest to capture. The heronry is often visited by Kingfishers, Mandarin ducks, raptors as well as resident herons and Canada geese. On this occasion I noticed that a piece of old piling was a popular spot for damselflies to rest - it was just a case of waiting for a pleasing combination of numbers and spacing.

2nd Do Not Panic! by David Weeks

3rd Glowing Fungi in the Dark by Peter Evans

Pete writes: ‘The image was taken in the small woods up by the Cherhill monument.
I used my Olympus OM1 with the 90mm F3.5 Olympus macro lens. The camera was on a tripod low down looking at the mushrooms on a decaying log. It was a stack of 20 images taken at 1/13sec, F5.6, ISO200 and lit from above with an LED light.
The images were stacked together using the Helicon software and finished off using Photoshop. In photoshop I had 2 stacked images as 2 adjustment layers . One lit with the torch and the top one not. I used a layer mask and painted the lit bottom of the mushroom through onto the top image’.

HC Lonely Log by David Locke

David’s image was taken at Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower in Wales. This cut log was alone, washed up on the beach, asking for a minimalist look.

HC Canadian Goose in Early Morning Sunlight by Richard Jones

Richard’s image was taken early one morning down at Hills Ponds, Compton Bassett. The light was beautiful and then the Canadian Goose decided to stretch its wings, which were back lit with golden light.

HC Sunlight Through the Trees by John Milburn

John says: ‘While driving up to the New Forest to try and find some deer to photograph, we stopped in a lay-by and watched the sun rise. Just after the sun had risen I spotted this shot through the trees. I just had to take it, I was very pleased that I did!’

HC Zebra Longing by Craig Purvis

Craig tells me: ‘Just for a change, on miserable Monday afternoon, I thought I'd visit the butterfly 'hothouse' at Butterfly World near Swindon. Here, there are a number of beautiful and exotic species that will happily land in relatively close proximity to you. A fast 50-140mm zoom the ideal lens in these conditions - it's merely a case of achieving a composition that excludes manmade objects and background, helped by shooting wide open. But it is uncomfortably humid!’

Advanced Section

1st Open Air Recycling, Southbank by Penny Clarke

Penny says ‘I was walking along the Southbank with my friend @bcwilts on a day trip to London doing street photography and saw this ‘open air wardrobe’ which people can put clothes in they don’t want for others in need to pick up. I was attracted to the colours and how they worked with each other. I did get a

few funny looks from people wondering what on earth I was photographing but I am pleased with the result.

2nd Waiting for the Ghost Ships by Steve Hardman

As many people in the Club know, my very first entry in a Club competition was of a Jetty on Coniston Water which I spent ages composing. The judge was quite complimentary to begin with and then just dismissed it as too central! Some time later I was experimenting with multiple images and came across the scene on Derwent water and thought it would be a good subject with a central jetty and then two carefully superimposed images coming in from either side. It gave a slightly ethereal feel and the gulls seemed to be waiting for something - ghost ships?

3rd The Not Impressed Look by Alan Benson

This is a royal red deer stag taken in the New Forest this October. I walked out into an opening from the woods and suddenly saw this big boy no more than 20 metres away to my right. I froze and so did he! He then glanced over his shoulder towards me, I did not move so I managed to get six images of him before he turned and walked back into the woods from where I came.

HC Lighting Up by Richard Blackbourne

Richard writes ‘Lighting up was taken on a Timeline event at Didcot railway station after taking numerous photos of steam engines I took the camera off the tripod and captured a few portraits this one caught my eye with him lighting his pipe and the smoke rising’.

HC Early Morning at Mont St Michel by Sue Wadman

Vestrahorn is a distinctive 454m high mountain in south-east Iceland. On its seaward side, a black sand beach has been sculpted by wind into sand dunes. On this February afternoon, snow was lying over much of the black sand and a brief patch of sunlight caught the peaks of the mountain.

HC Dahlia with Drama by Janet Rutter

HC First Light by Richard Blackbourne

First light was taken on a fungi hunt. Richard wanted to create some glowing fungi so in the mask section of Photoshop he selected the background and turned the exposure down which he quite liked.

HC Vestrahorn by Robert Harvey

HC Raindrops Keep.... by Alan Benson

Alan explains ‘This Kingfisher was taken at Bradford on Avon in the spring on a very wet morning. He always sits in this tree which was only around 15 metres away so close enough to get the detail with the water droplets on the leaves’.
