Fungi Photography Outing

  • Devizes Photography Club London Road Bridge Devizes, England, SN10 2DL United Kingdom (map)

Join us for an autumn morning exploring the world of fungi photography at West Woods, near Lockeridge.

Autumn is the best time to photograph fungi, with the woodland offering plenty of opportunities to capture interesting shapes, colours, textures and intricate details.

We are delighted that Simon Knight will be joining us to demonstrate focus stacking, a technique that allows photographers to combine multiple images taken at different focus points to achieve greater depth of field and beautifully detailed close-up photographs.

Whether you're an experienced macro photographer or simply keen to try something new, everyone is welcome. This will be a great opportunity to learn, experiment and share ideas with fellow club members.

Suggested Photography Equipment

  • Camera with a macro lens, if you have one, although a standard or zoom lens will also work.

  • Tripod – particularly useful for close-up photography and focus stacking. For best results a Tripod that will open close to the ground will Gove best results

  • Remote shutter release or camera self-timer to minimise camera shake.

  • Spare batteries and memory cards.

  • Small LED light, torch or reflector to help illuminate fungi in shaded areas.

  • Diffuser to soften harsh lighting-If you have one

  • A kneeling mat or waterproof groundsheet for photographing fungi close to the woodland floor.

  • A small brush or blower to gently remove loose debris from your equipment.

Clothing and Personal Essentials

Woodland conditions in late October can be chilly, damp and muddy, so please come prepared.

  • Waterproof walking boots or wellingtons with good grip.

  • Warm layers and a waterproof jacket.

  • Waterproof trousers, if available, as we may spend time kneeling or crouching.

  • Hat and gloves, depending on the weather.

  • A kneeling mat or small ground sheet

A Few Things to Remember

Fungi are an important part of the woodland ecosystem, so please take care not to damage or disturb them or the surrounding habitat. We want to leave everything as we find it for others to enjoy.

There is no need to have specialist equipment or previous experience of focus stacking. It would be useful if you are able to find out if you camera supports in-camera focus stacking and know where this is in your menu - OM systems and most mirrorless ones do, if you are not sure ,can you drop me an email, let me know which camera you are using and we will try to find out.

At the  SIG meeting on 5th November 2026 at Bishop Cannings , Simon will run a photo stacking/macro processing workshop so you can learn how to process your images.

We look forward to seeing you at 9.00 am in the West Woods car park on Sunday 25th October for what promises to be an enjoyable and informative morning of photography.

Please let Caroline know if you are able to attend.
