Golden Rays on the River Kennet by Bridget Codrington -1st place

Bridget took this image on an April morning last year just after sunrise. It is a location just outside Marlborough in the beautiful Kennet valley close to Bridget’s home.

Llyn Cau at Sunrise by Robert Harvey 2nd place

Llyn Cau is a stunning glacial lake at an elevation of 480m on the flanks of Cadair Idris in southern Snowdonia. Surrounded by 400m high mountain walls, the rising sun shines into the corrie only in late spring and late summer. Reflections at this elevation can be rare. I ascended in darkness under cloudy skies but the weather forecast indicated that the cloud would break up just after sunrise. Sure enough it did and the first sun of the day shone into the back of the corrie, giving two pools of light in a pleasing position. Fortunately I had taken a fisheye lens with me, which at 15mm focal length enabled me to get the whole lake in frame.

Sunrise at Turf Fen by Sue Wadman 3rd place

Having spent a few days up in Norfolk in December this was our last morning & we finally got a frosty, clear one.  The sunrise was happening behind where I was standing but the conditions were so good that the dawn colour spread far enough over the sky to reach the direction I was looking.  This is usually known more as a sunset spot so we were very lucky to get the conditions we did.

Channels in the Salt Marshes by Tony Leach - HC

Shortly after leaving our accommodation on Harris one morning, we spotted close to the road (and by chance) these channels in the salt marshes. I selected this particular channel because of the way it lead across the bay to the hill on the far side. To achieve separation it was taken with the camera above my head (thank goodness for my R6’s flip-out, rotating screen!).

Setting Sun in Holywell Bay by Frank Collins

Frank’s gorgeous image was taken in late June 2021 on the north Cornish Coast. The falling tide had exposed beautiful patterns in the wet sand to be picked out by the setting sun. I had set out with hopes of a spectacular sunset over the ocean – but this was as good as it got, since shortly after taking this image, the sun disappeared behind the bank of cloud on the horizon, and the sky did not colour up either.

Winter Sunrise at Martinsell Hill by Bridget Codrington - HC

Another local sunrise here from Bridget, Martinsell Hill overlooks the Vale of Pewsey. Bridget says ‘As a landscape photographer, I am very fortunate to live in the heart of the beautiful county of Wiltshire and love nothing more than a pre-dawn adventure’.

The rising sun appears from behind Salisbury Plain on a freezing January morning. With very little cloud in the sky, I had only seconds to make this picture before the sun became too bright to include. I was fortunate that my vantage point enabled the composition to be balanced by a clump of trees on the right.

Evening Light at the Roaches by Sue Wadman - HC

Sue’s stunning image was taken one evening in June whilst staying near Buxton in the Peak District.  “I went back to The Roaches having spent a previous day walking in the area in hope of a sunset that showed early promise but didn’t happen.  However the evening light was just lovely casting the lovely warm glow over The Roaches and Hen Cloud”.

Pete’s beautiful image was taken in South Wales when doing what is called the waterfalls walk. The camera was the Canon 5D mark 3 with a 17 -40 F4 lens on a tripod fitted with a 6 stop ND filter and standing in the river. The settings were F22 0.6 sec exposure, iso 100, -1 exposure compensation at 22mm.

Autumnal Wales by Gerald Clarke - HC

Gerald’s lovely image was taken in Snowdonia, and was meant to show the colours, the history and the present landscape for its subtle beauty. It shows the power of nature, both in the stream and in the bracken claiming back the hillside. The streams were a revelation to me in their colours and effect with differing shutter speeds.

Waterfall and Black Cullins at Skye by Peter Evans - HC

The Black Cuillins was taken pre-covid on the Isle of Skye. Six of us had rented a cottage nearby and I was walking down river from the cottage one morning.
I used my Canon 5D mark 3 and the 17 -40 F4 lens on a tripod from a footbridge. The settings were F11 at ¼ sec iso 100 and I also used a polarizer to slow the water down.

When Frost was Spectre-gray by Gerald Clarke - HC

Gerald’s serene frosty image was taken in Savenake forest, on one of a few such mornings this winter.
I was looking at leading lines, little or no sky and the emphasis on a wintery look. I love the shades of green, grey, orange and purple. The image resembles a Christmas card scene more than l realised at the time.

Mist over Pewsey Vale by Tony Leach 1st place

I asked Tony about his beautiful image ‘I went out alone to Martinsell Hill shortly before sunrise one misty morning.  I was disappointed to find that, from the footpath at the top, there wasn’t sufficient mist for the shot I envisaged. However,  as I was most of the way down, being much lower, the mist created a lovely layering effect with some great leading lines and a splendid row of trees in the foreground. Off came my backpack before the mist cleared.  Shooting with my telephoto lens at 200 mm I was really happy to have caught a far more original image that the often-photographed view from the top.

Watching Sunrise, Parkhouse Hill by Robert Harvey 2nd place

Parkhouse Hill in the Peak District gets its distinctive shape from its formation as a reef knoll in tropical seas during the Carboniferous Period. On this October morning it was rising from swathes of mist in the surrounding valley. The picture was completed by two walkers standing on the summit to watch the sunrise.

Buachaille Etive Mor by Tony Leach 3rd place

I asked Tony about his dramatic image: ’I was travelling with three others up to the Outer Hebrides, having overnighted at Ballachulish. We arrived early morning at Buachaille Etive Moor. I composed to capture the motion in the main water flow and the small side fall. Then took several shots over the next hour to get an exposure that captured the texture and motion of the water (1/6 second) and the dappled lighting I wanted’.

Low Tide, Porth Nanven by Robert Harvey - HC

Porth Nanven, at the seaward end of Cot Valley, is amongst England’s westernmost beaches. Pounded by huge Atlantic waves, it is characterised by huge ovoid boulders, some of them up to a metre in length. Low tide reveals attractive, weed-free boulders framed by rocks. The Brisons, twin islands located about one mile offshore, make a handy focal point in the distance. A long exposure has smooths the waves into the appearance of mist.

Sunset, Trebarwith Strand by Robert Harvey - HC

Trebarwith Strand in North Cornwall features a quirky tongue of rock which is oriented a little north of west. The setting sun aligns with the rock ridge in mid-April and early September. The rock ridge looks best when surrounded by water within one hour of high tide. When the tide starts to fall, it leaves the rocks wet and reflective. There are only two days per year when the ideal tidal condition coincides with the ideal sunset position. The photograph was made on one of them; 12 April 2021 at 8.04pm, as the sun set one hour after high tide.naturalworldphotography.net
