Capturing Time, Long Exposure Landscape

On 2nd December, John Miskelly FRPS, FBIPP, FIPF treated us to a captivating presentation on the art of long exposure photography.

After a brief overview of the essential gear, John shared a series of breathtaking images captured across the Isles of Skye and Harris & Lewis, as well as Venice, Lofoten, France, and Senja. Having spent time in Harris and Lewis and Venice, the locations discuss were familiar. I can certainly remember hail followed by sun on luskentyre beach so your comments resinated with me.

He walked us through his process of ‘slowing things down,’ demonstrating how a scene transforms from a standard exposure to one taken with varying strengths of neutral density filters, culminating in the dramatic effect achieved with a big stopper was enthralling rewarding and inspiring and will certainly make many members retink how they view and take landscape photography.

When viewing long exposure work, the word simplicity immediately comes to mind. By stripping away visual clutter and softening much of the colour, These images take on a serene, fine-art quality - something John showcased beautifully throughout the evening.

A journey into long exposure landscape photography, looking at how John uses light, composition and the choice of location to create his own distinctive style of imargery.
